Houston is a beautiful city in which to explore with your grandkids. The weather is warm, and there are many fun things to do! Here’s a list of our favorite activities in Houston, TX, to do with young kids:
Children’s Museum of Houston
The Children’s Museum of Houston is a free senior living activity and a great place to take kids. It has a variety of exhibits, including an art studio, a music room, and a dress-up station. It also has an outdoor playground that children can play on while they relax on the lawn or in one of their picnic areas. In addition to being a family-friendly museum, it has a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs for your grandchild(ren). If you want something other than just ice cream at lunchtime or after playing all day in the museum, they have a cafe available at no extra charge!
The Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science

The Aquarium
The Aquarium is a great place to learn about marine life, conservation, and the ocean. It’s also fun! Children and adults alike will enjoy learning about the different types of fish and their habitats and how they help protect our planet’s oceans.
Space Center Houston
With the Space Center Houston being only a few miles from the airport and offering some of the most educational exhibits in all of Texas, it’s a great place to visit. If you’re looking for activities with your grandchildren that will teach them something new and exciting, this is one place you should consider visiting!
The Zoo
Your grandkids will enjoy seeing animals from all over the world, and there are plenty of activities, such as riding the train or participating in educational programs. If you’re looking for more than just an afternoon at the zoo, try visiting on a weekend when you can have lunch at one of their picnic areas or feed some giraffes!
Downtown Aquarium
Many academic programs at the Downtown Aquarium teach about sea life, including marine biology classes that allow you to learn about sharks, dolphins, or sea turtles while interacting with them in an interactive touch tank. The Aquarium has:
- Several sharks and other aquatic animals, such as rays and eels, are displayed.
- The underwater tunnel guests can walk through while looking up at all these different species swimming above them in their natural environment!
- The Alligator exhibit features over 20 crocodilians, including American alligators & caiman, plus African pygmy crocodiles & saltwater crocodiles found throughout South America & Asia, respectively!
Catch an Astros Game
Houston, Texas, is home to the Houston Astros, an MLB team that plays at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston. They have a farm team for minor leaguers called the Gulf Coast League Astros. There are stands selling food like hot dogs or nachos with salsa; vendors selling shirts; games like T-shirt tosses where you can win prizes; free giveaways like hats or sunglasses; and even live bands performing between innings.
