As you were experiencing full-blown teen angst, one of your parents may have said, “Hey! This is the best time of your life!”. Well, no disrespect, but they may have been mistaken because residing in independent living communities can be the best time of life for any number of retirees! Unfortunately, some people put off a move such as this. They experience some type of trepidation… or something.
Unfortunately, when the thought of living in a retirement home comes to mind, some people picture mushy food, boring bingo, wheelchairs/rocking chairs, and frumpy housecoats/robes as daily attire – and tediousness, in abundance. Today’s modern independent living communities are anything but! With regularly scheduled celebrations and events, health and wellness programs, numerous activities from which to choose, chef-prepared meals served in a fine dining atmosphere, transportation services, and so much more, today’s retirement communities are like being on vacation full-time.
All of that said, some people still hesitate. Here are some of the reasons they give for wanting to wait.
I Don’t Think I Can Afford It
For just a moment, consider all of the individual costs you have by owning your own house. You may or may not still have a mortgage, but you probably have property taxes. If not, you likely pay rent every month. You have to pay for your car, auto insurance, gasoline, and upkeep. Speaking of upkeep, how is the condition of your house? Need repairs? What about food? Utilities? Instead of having to pay each of these bills separately, under one fee, everything is covered when you live in an independent retirement community. You may, in fact, be surprised at how affordable it actually is.
I Want to Stay in My House and Age in Place
Okay, but why can’t “aging in place” happen in a fun-filled, safe and secure, healthy environment such as an independent living community; surrounded by others who have lots in common with you? Whether you just need a cozy one-bedroom suite or a spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom, 938 square-foot apartment, aging in place – in one of today’s modern retirement communities – represents aging in style… in place.
Moving Is a Hassle
Well, we can’t fault you for not looking forward to the process of moving. But think of all you will gain by doing so this time around. You’ll likely have to downsize a bit, so be prepared for that. Again, getting rid of excess baggage is a good thing. Most people have far too much “stuff” in their homes. This is the perfect opportunity to reduce clutter.
My Independence Is Very Important to Me
They call it an “Independent Living Community” for a reason. Your independence is encouraged every step of the way. Your time is yours to enjoy as you see fit. Numerous opportunities are offered for socialization, exercise, celebration, and more, but it’s up to you to choose what you want to attend and when (and with whom).
Retirement Community Living Is for Old People – I’m Too Young
You’re never too young to enjoy the finer things in life. That’s what today’s independent living communities are all about. With numerous amenities, available maintenance/housekeeping services, activities to fit any ability level, transportation services, scheduled events and celebrations, and so much more, why not enjoy life to the fullest while you’re still young enough to be able to do so? Check with the community you’re considering to find out what the minimum age is. Some are 62 years of age and up, while others are 55 and up.
