If you are at retirement age and considering making the move to a retirement community, you might be overwhelmed by the many choices. You might not be sure what to look for, what questions to ask, who to turn to, etc. It’s important to discover independent living opportunities in the area in which you’d like to spend your golden years. If, for example, you like Texas, explore your options within your favorite Texas cities and surrounding areas.
All too often, when people start looking at independent living communities, they make the same mistakes. These errors can add up to making a bad choice or feeling overwhelmed when they didn’t really need to feel that way.
To help you in your endeavor to find the best retirement community in which to live, we put together a number of errors to avoid. Don’t make the following mistakes…
Believing Everything You See Online
Particularly when it comes to referral sites, never believe all the hype you read about any product, service, business, etc. Especially where referral sites are concerned, they may receive a kickback of some type for referring others to a specific retirement community. Your best course of action is to tour a community you’re considering so you can see, for yourself, what they have to offer. Talk to the residents and the care team.
Avoid Speaking to the Care Team
The people who provide care and assistance in today’s retirement communities are the people you will be coming into contact with every day. It’s important to talk to these people face-to-face. That’s one reason a tour of the community you’re considering is so important. Talk to the residents there as well. These are your prospective neighbors.
Rely Strictly on the Internet for Research
While searching the Internet is a great way to research just about anything today, when it comes to something as important as a retirement community, you will want to do additional research. Once again, taking a tour and talking to the people involved in the community is the best course of action. You may even want to test out a meal.
Not Understanding the Different Types of Communities
There are a handful of retirement community types. There is independent living, skilled nursing care, memory care, assisted living communities, and more. Make sure you have a complete understanding of what each is about and whether they are the appropriate fit.
Independent living, for example, means that the person residing there can take care of all their activities of daily living (ADLs) – i.e., eating, toileting, walking, getting out of and into bed, dressing, showering/bathing, etc. – on their own, without assistance. They should also be able to make their own meals (even though dining opportunities are frequently available in today’s retirement communities).
