One of the most emotionally and physically challenging processes you can go through as an adult is moving. If you’ve lived somewhere most of your life, it becomes even more so. Though there are many benefits to residing in independent living communities in Midlothian, TX, the move involved will cause some emotions and possibly even trepidation on the part of certain individuals. For a successful move, some planning is necessary.
If you will be making the move soon to independent living, the following information will be useful in helping you put together a plan.
Downsizing and Organizing
Chances are, compared to the home you live in now, your independent living apartment will be somewhat smaller. That’s going to mean downsizing. Here’s how to plan for a smaller living quarter:
- Give away collections (or sell them).
- Attack your project room by room.
- Let it go if you haven’t used it in some time.
- Duplicate items should be eliminated.
- The process should not be rushed, nor should it be put off indefinitely.
- Carefully consider the measurements of the apartment you’re moving to. If you can, get a floor plan.
- Put all of your important papers in a folder and consider putting that in a lockbox.
- Keep an ongoing notebook/list of goals and accomplishments regarding the move.
Finally, in your new apartment, it’s okay to make at least some of it look like your old residence. Just on a smaller scale.
Time to Pack
If you’re not using professionals, here are some packing tips:
- Use towels and clothes to fill in empty spaces or gaps in boxes and make sure that the heavier pieces are at the bottom.
- Use one box for the living room, one for the bedroom, one for the bathroom, etc. Describe the items in each box and label the room that it’s for on the outside of the box.
- Packing dishes: around each dish, place packing paper. With more paper, wrap about half a dozen together and place them on their sides.
- Right before you walk out the door for your new residence, pack a suitcase with important items like shampoos, soaps, washcloths, towels, snacks, treats, medications, and personal care items that you need close by.
Recognize the Inevitable
In this world, nothing is perfect. That’s going to include your move. Something will likely go wrong but try not to sweat the small stuff – and remember, it’s all small stuff. Think about the big picture. There are so many wonderful things awaiting you in your independent living community, don’t let a little something that may have gone wrong ruin it for you.
