At any age, people can be influenced by the negative effects of stress. The effects of stress, particularly for retirees, can take both a mental and physical toll. Fortunately, there are numerous techniques that have proven helpful, allowing a person to feel relaxed and, thereby, less stressed.
Stress can result in any number of negative side effects including stomach issues, high blood pressure, back pain, and headaches, just to name a few. Your chance of a heart attack or stroke may also increase if you have too much stress in your life. What’s more, aside from the negative physical aspects of stress, anger, anxiety, and depression can result unless you learn how to relax.
Let’s look at a few ways for retirement age adults to relax and unwind.
Listening
Listen to an audiobook or some soothing music to relax. You may be able to calm your body, improve memory, and decrease chronic pain just by listening to soothing sounds.
Visit a Spa or Get a Massage
Feel rejuvenated and more relaxed, while improving blood flow and relaxing muscle tissue, courtesy of massage therapy. A fast track to tranquility, people of any age can enjoy this relaxation technique. Clear it with your doctor if you plan on visiting a spa.
Watch a Movie
Catch a movie with a friend, spouse, grandchild, etc. or watch one on your own. See life from a new perspective, cry or laugh along with the characters, and lose yourself in a good story.
Meditation
An effective technique for relaxation, some retirees decide to simply sit and breathe in silence. You can improve your overall health through meditation while your body and mind unwind.
Gardening
Not only will you be able to enjoy the “fruits and vegetables” of your labor, gardening promotes relaxation. You may also be able to keep your brain sharp, strengthen your immune system, and improve heart health while you’re relieving stress through working the soil with your hands.
Talk
Conversations with friends can promote overall well-being and happiness. Do it in person, in a Zoom meeting on your computer, or over the phone. Just call someone to chat – there doesn’t need to be any specific purpose in mind.
Yoga
Calm your mind and body with some beginner friendly, relaxing yoga poses. Consider the following: happy baby, seated spinal twist, triangle pose, or downward facing dog.
