Do you have a retirement-age loved one who needs to transition to a skilled nursing community for a while? Are you, and they, wondering what that’s going to be like? It will be a process, making the move. There can be no doubt it will be unfamiliar and maybe even challenging, at least at first. Hopefully, before the move, you (and possibly even your loved one) toured the community and were introduced to the care team (and maybe some current residents). That will help in the knowledge of what to expect.
Assure your loved ones that, at all times, they will receive the care and attention they need. A medical team will be ready to make sure they are cared for, they get their medication, and they receive assistance when needed, etc. Here, a typical day in a skilled nursing community will be detailed.
Mornings
A member of the nursing team makes rounds checking on residents and helping them with grooming, dressing, bathing, and other tasks involving personal care, as needed.
Work with a therapist or exercises in a gym-like environment will likely take place after breakfast. Prescribed exercises may already be in place for your loved one, but additionally, physical therapists can help your loved one regain their independence by working on balance, motor coordination, and building strength.
Afternoons
Socialization is encouraged during lunchtime. If friends or family come to visit, residents can have lunch with them. Residents also have the option to enjoy lunch in their room, if they’d like.
Special dietary restrictions and/or needs are always accommodated by the meal preparation team. Meals are nutritious and delicious. Regarding the food preferences of your loved one, you or they may want or need to talk with a dietitian.
For many, following lunch, therapy sessions will continue. Assisting your loved one to once again be able to handle normal daily activities may be one area of concentration. Speech, communication, etc., are other areas that might be worked on.
To promote mental well-being and socialization, scheduled activities frequently take place in the afternoon, as well. This can include shopping trips, musical performances, bingo, reading time, coloring, puzzles, arts and crafts, and much more.
Night Time
Your loved one will have the opportunity to relax with friends and family after a delightful dinner.
What’s more, they’re encouraged to stimulate their bodies and minds with puzzles, board games, card games, and other opportunities for socialization with other residents. The enjoyment and participation in numerous planned events will be another opportunity for socialization, as well as mental and physical stimulation.
