One of the most vulnerable groups as far as safety and health concerns go is retirees. As you age, safety considerations and needs evolve. Adapting to change isn’t always easy. During retirement, you can thrive, however, if you’re proactive regarding your social life, safety, and health.
Where are you better off? In the home you’ve been in for years or in one of today’s premier retirement apartment communities in Rice, TX?
Here we’re going to compare living in retirement communities versus living alone and/or having in-home care, and which situation is safer. Let’s look at some statistics.
Making a Connection
Living in a retirement community means being connected to not only the residents within but possibly to your community, as well. When it comes to quality of life, an important contributor is that of a sense of community to roughly 40% of today’s retirees.
The risk of cardiovascular disease increases by 90% when a retiree lives in isolation. Socialization is crucial to healthy living.
Eating Right
As a result of retirement community nutritional programming (chef-prepared meals that are nutritious and delicious), the percentage of retirees that said they eat healthier was 77%.
The risk of depression, asthma, heart disease, and more rise drastically for retirees living at home because so many struggles to feed themselves properly (roughly one in six).
Falls
There has been an up to 40% fall decrease due to prevention programs taking place in today’s retirement communities.
Every year, in private homes, 1/3 of retired individuals experience a fall.
Socialization
Compared to those who live alone, the chances of an individual developing dementia decreases by 26% through the various types of social programming available in retirement communities.
The risk of physical decline is almost 60% higher for retirees who live alone.
Fires
The number of retirees who die in fires in retirement communities is almost nonexistent. It is less than 1%.
Compared to the rest of the population, the risk of dying in a fire increases for retirees living in their own homes by an astounding 250%!
Being Ready for an Emergency
If something were to go wrong, residents felt they would be okay because of all of the preparedness that takes place in a retirement community. Almost 100% of them believed this.
When it came to emergencies, many retirees who live alone felt unprepared. Roughly 60% didn’t feel they were truly ready, according to a national survey.
Security and Safety
Adult children of retirees were asked how they felt about their parents’ physical security and safety in the retirement community in which they reside. Almost 100% said they experienced far better peace of mind as a result of their parents living in the community.
Compared to younger adults, there is a 53% greater chance a retiree will be victimized/robbed if they live alone (or even with a caregiver), in their own house.
