Compared to all other age groups, at a far faster rate, retirees are moving to the suburbs. In their golden years, they are choosing to be car independent and live outside the city. Granted, there are numerous ways to shop for what they need online and in a handful of urban retail locations. But big city amenities will require a car ride, Uber, taxi, or bus from their suburban home (or an Instacart shopper).
In urban areas, condo after condo seems to be popping up. One would think retirees would flock to these. Everything they need is right there in the city – doctors, groceries, salons, department stores, etc. But no. For whatever reason, at least for now, they far prefer the suburbs.
Retiring in the City – The Downsides
While there are good points to living in an urban area, more and more retirees may be moving to the suburbs because of the downside of living in the city. Retirement-age people may be hesitant to drive in the traffic-jammed streets (and try to find a place to park), there are concerns about their privacy, they hate the noise, and they also have worries about the serious feeling of congestion and crowding.
Cars, Cars, and More Cars
Though there are more cars in the city than one can possibly imagine, there aren’t always enough parking spots for them all. Since everything is relatively close at hand, you may be better off walking or taking an Uber in the city just to avoid trying to find prime real estate in which to park.
Who’s Watching You?
Privacy is a concern for numerous individuals, particularly when it comes to retirees. In the city, it seems like someone’s always looking in your window from the high-rise right across the street. As hard as parking spots are to find, privacy is even more difficult.
What’s That? I Can’t Hear You!
The noise in the city is deafening. There are no two ways about it. Car horns honking, people yelling, sirens blaring, jackhammers pounding – the list goes on and on. The peace and serenity of the suburbs are an attractive draw, for sure.
In addition to no parking space, there is very little space to do much of anything. People live on top of people, and stories are literally attached to each other with nothing more than a wall between them. Stacking residences upon residences in high-rises seems to be the only way to make more room for more people.
