Making the transition to an assisted living community is a big deal. A lot of planning is required. How do you find the best fit for your loved one? Naturally, you’ll want to visit a few facilities and take a tour. Additionally, you’ll need to know which questions to ask on an assisted-living tour. But first, you’ll need to narrow things down from all the available retirement communities.
Once you’ve limited your choice to two or three, a tour can be scheduled. You will meet residents and team members as you walk through the assisted living community. You will also get to take a close-up look at both the interior and exterior of the building/grounds and get a feel for the atmosphere.
While you’re doing all of this, questions should be posed to the person conducting the tour. Here are some suggestions.
Are There a Variety of Floor Plans from Which to Choose?
You may consider asking whether you can see a selection of floor plans and, additionally, visit a residence. Inquire as to whether or not they’re pet friendly, how repairs are handled, what types of safety features exist, whether or not your loved one can paint/decorate their room, and more.
What Kind of Activities and Events Do You Sponsor?
One of the greatest things about living in a community is that there are practically endless opportunities for socialization. Many of today’s assisted living and/or retirement communities have team members responsible for scheduling these types of events. Additional questions in this category can pertain to safety precautions taken during the events, what types of events take place, where they take place and more.
What Kind of Amenities Are Included?
Some of today’s retirement communities offer so many amenities, residents can’t help but live stylishly in a desirably exclusive environment. Some of the amenities you may want to inquire about could pertain to utilities being included, cable television, Wi-Fi, meal services, transportation, laundry, housekeeping and more.
Care Teams
An important aspect of any community involves the members of their care team. Ask to meet some of the members of the care team while taking your tour. To get an idea of the experience your loved one will have, try to get a feel for who they are. What kind of training have they had? What is the resident to staff ratio?
