Just 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico lies our native Victoria, a multicultural hub that’s also one of Texas’ oldest cities. How rich is our region’s history, you wonder? Well, there’s 13,000 (!) years of history on display at the Museum of the Coastal Bend, everything from primitive hunting tools and the Wooly Mammoth to 17th century explorers, and the early settlers that helped give rise to the Victoria we know and love today.
Along the drivable Victoria History Trail, modern-day explorers will discover 80 homes and properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Popular places include The Victoria County Courthouse, which was built in 1892, and Fossati’s Delicatessen, located in Downtown Victoria. In 1882, Fossati’s Delicatessen first opened its doors, and today the deli is still run by the founding family! Downtown Victoria also boasts St. Mary’s Church, the second-oldest Roman Catholic church in Texas and the first to be canonically established in the Republic of Texas.
Art lovers will want to visit The Nave Museum (and others), while fans of the performing arts can become immersed in the year-round productions from Theatre Victoria, the Victoria Symphony, and Victoria Ballet Theatre. There are also regular community events, festivals and live music performances, 200 species on display at The Texas Zoo, and Riverside Park, which offers hiking and biking trails, an 18-hole golf course, watersports and more.
Hungry? Not for long, because Victoria is a central stop along the Coastal Texas BBQ Trail. Plus, with more than 125 restaurants serving everything from downhome comfort foods and Texas staples to exotic dishes from around the world, there are culinary delights awaiting in every part of the city. A few of our favorites include The Pump House, Frances Marie’s Restaurant and Cantina, and Sky Restaurant. There’s also Rosebud Records, Grill & Theater downtown, which harkens back to the 1950’s diners that still hold a special place in all of our hearts! It’s the perfect spot after working up an appetite browsing the eclectic, family-owned boutiques of downtown, or the 65+ shops and destinations at the Victoria Mall.
